Continued from Cover Story: True or False: You should teach your children not to talk with strangers

According to the Family Education Website, this is FALSE. Here's why: Your child sees you break this rule all the time. You talk to strangers at the bank, at the supermarket, or simply because they're nice.

If your child is ever lost, talking to a stranger may be the single greatest asset she has. To seek assistance, describe one's situation, give a phone number, ask advice, and say "No" -- all these interactions require a child to speak with strangers. What you really want to avoid is your child going somewhere with someone.
